Abstract

Effective patients’ triage is now a crucial nursing activity, and is dependent on accurate triage knowledge and practice. The aim of this study was to assess the knowledge and practice of nurses regarding triage in the emergency care unit of Ismailia University Hospital. This descriptive study included a convenience sample of 51 nurses who working in the study setting with six months or more of experience in emergency nursing. A self-administered written questionnaire and an observation checklist were used to collect the data. The study findings revealed that nurses’ knowledge about triage was deficient, with 11.8% of them having satisfactory knowledge. Meanwhile, 31.4% of the nurses had adequate practice of primary assessment of triage. It is recommended to develop and implement a clear evidence-based triage system and related policies and procedures in the study setting, to train the nurses on its application, with close supervision and regular feedback. Nursing curricula must give more emphasis on emergency care and triage. Future research is suggested to assess the effect of training on nurses’ knowledge and practice, and on patients’ outcome
