Abstract

The carbonate facies of the Tarwan Calk and the thebes formation are characterized in the studied area by the following features:
1- They have a consistent facies.
2- The thebes formation is represented by marly faces (at the base), rhythmic chalky facies and noduler and shelly limestone faces.
3-petrographically, the carbonate facies is composed mainly of bioclastic wackstone and lime mudstone
4-planktonic ooze in laminated carbonate beds have been encountered throughout the lower part of the Thebes formation.
5-The chalk beds frequently form thin hard massive beds alternating with semi friable, laminated ones.
6-except for lamination, no other primary depositional structures such as ripple marks, cross-beddinggg and graded bedding have been recorded.
7-General paucity of trace elements; only sr content is relatively high.
