Abstract

The present study investigated the effectiveness of suggested activities in developing some translation skills appropriate for a group of second year, English department, and faculty of education students. There are many Instruments used as a list of translation skills and another of suggested translation activities. Which included four main skills?
-Gist reading skills sub skills (-Reading and comprehending skills, - scanning Distinguish main and subordinate ideas and Identifying the writer’s)II-linguistic skills (while translation skills)sub skills (-Dividing each paragraph\text into meaningful portions \sentences , - Determining meaning of difficult \unfamiliar words ,-Using dictionary, Using word analysis (affixes),context clues ,cultural element ,grammar &structure Analysis .III – using compensation strategies sub skills (paraphrasing , adding , and omitting ).IV- Editing and proofreading skills sub skill (editing , - proofread , - Writing the final \ refined copy). Translation activities include : a- semantic mapping b- cloze Translation , c- multiple choice Translation , d- paraphrase \ summarize Activity , e- Independent student Translation , a pre and post test is conducted , the experiment includes ten lessons each lesson extended to develop some translation skills and activities . Result indicated that the suggested program –based activities to develop translation skills are effective in developing skills. The study concludes that systematic training on translation skills which focuses on translation as a process rather than a product and a skill rather than a mean is deeded for language programs in second year English department, faculty of education students. Recommendations include that much interest should be given to the quality of teaching translation, give a project for each student and try to use translation games as a way in enhancing and encouraging translation skills and finally a bad need to using new technologies in translation process.
