Abstract we are just starting to scratch the surface of what the health effects of vitamin D are. There is reason to pay attention and vitamin D indeed may be the new frontier in autism prevention (Meguid et al., 2010). It is robust enough to consider the following: 1. Special attention to vitamin D status in autistic children. 2. Routine supplementation of vitamin D to autistic children hand in hand with other behavioral and pharmacological therapy. Additional studies are clearly needed in the following fields: 1. The effect of the use of different doses of vitamin D on the psychiatric test results, as the effective dose for vitamin D deficiency treatment is highly debated and is frequently being changed ranging from 800 IU to 5000 IU, and then choosing the most effective dose that produce the best psychiatric results improvement to be prescribed routinely to autistic children. 2. The genetic basis of autism and their subsequent repercussions. 3. The neuroendocrine interaction of vitamin D and parathyroid hormone. 4. The association between the severity of autism symptoms and vitamin D deficiency. 5. Epidemiological studies of vitamin D status and further stress on the theory of vitamin D insensitivity in the Middle East resident children. 6. The potential clinical implications of maintaining high circulating vitamin D levels in infants and children and to evaluate the full therapeutic and preventive potential of vitamin D in autism. |
