Abstract The present study is an endeavor to clarify the influence of inhibitory ( taurine ) and excitatory ( nitric oxide “NO” ) neurotransmitters upon some reproductive aspects in mature male rats. For this purpose, 180 mature male Albino rats were left for 2 weeks for acclimatization. During the experimental period, rats were housed in standard plastic cages with stainless steel cover lids and maintained under natural environmental temperature ( 23 ± 3oC ), humidity ( 70 % ± 3 ) and dark-light cycle. Rats under experiment were equally divided into 3 comparable groups; the first was left as controls injected with isotonic saline ( 0.85 % ). Each rat of the 2nd group was injected with 1 / 20 LD50 of taurine while those of the 3rd group were injected with L-arginine. For all rats, the injected dose of the corresponding treatment was freshly prepared by dissolving it in 0.5 ml saline and injected sc every 3 days for 2 successive months. At the end of the 8th week, individual blood samples were collected from all groups with the corresponding pituitaries to evaluate levels of follicle stimulating hormone ( FSH ), interstitial cell stimulating hormone ( ICSH ) and testosterone ( T ). Also, a serum portion was used to determine the total antioxidant activity according. Moreover, individual tissue samples of the corresponding testis were obtained and prepared for histopathological examination. Meantime, corresponding individual semen samples were collected by maceration of epididymis and vasa deferentia to be used for semen evaluation ( individual sperm motility, estimation of live / dead % and abnormalities ). |
