المستخلص

The purpose of this study was to implement selected and adapted standards of care for hemodialysis patients through an educational intervention based on the Canadian Association of Nephrology Nurses and Technologists standards of practice and the Egyptian Guidelines for hemodialysis nurses and to evaluate the knowledge and performance of hemodialysis nursing staff before and after the educational intervention. A quasi-experimental design was used. Data were collected pre-intervention, immediately after the intervention, and at follow-up three months after the intervention. A questionnaire examining knowledge and an observational checklist for the performance were used for data collection. The sample of 35 Egyptian staff nurses were female, experienced in hemodialysis care of patients but had limited continuing education while employed in their position. At baseline, participants were not familiar with the content included in the program. Results demonstrated statistically significant gains in the number of nurses who achieved a satisfactory knowledge score immediately post-intervention. At three months after the intervention, the number of nurses with satisfactory scores was maintained. There were also significant gains in the number of participants who achieved satisfactory performance score immediately post-intervention with continued improvement three months after the intervention. There was a significant, strong, positive correlation between the participants’ knowledge and their performance as a total. A 10 hours educational intervention based on international standards of care and the national guidelines improved the knowledge and performance of hemodialysis nurses in one unit. This study may be considered an initial step in a quality improvement process in hemodialysis units with limited resources.
