Abstract Two sets of pot experiments were conduoted to study ali conditions in four soil samples, as niesured by some l physical and chemical properties, plant gr.wtb and eral composition of plants. Two samples of clay soils taken from Tanta and Assiut vicinities; one sample ozn a loam soil near Assiut city, and a fourth from El— iarga oasis representing a sandy loam soil. These experi— nts were carried out during the years 1967—70 at Assiut niversity. Cotton, sorghum, barley and berseem crops wereusd in ‘these experiments t. find out their relative tolerance to alkalinity. Soil samples were treated with Na 11003 to obtain six different levels of exchangeable sodium percentage appr’xiniate1y 5, 10, 15, 20, 30 and 140% of the cation exchange capacity of each soil in the first season; and 6, i 9, 12, 13, 18, 21, 24, 27 and 30% in the second season. both seasons the untreated samples of each soil was considered as the control treatment, This su.mmary is mainly based on results of the second sesa since treatments o the first one inoluded a wider range of ESP levels.. from the results obtained, the following may be abstraatd a. |
