Abstract

Dysarthria is a collective name for a group of related
speech disorders that are due to disturbances in muscular
control of the speech mechanism resulting from impairment
of any of the basic motor processes involved in the execution
of speech (Darley et al., 1975).
Different types of dysarthrophonia have been known;
flaccid, spastic, ataxic, hypokinetic, hyperkinetic and mixed
dysarthrophonias (Yorkston and Beukelman, 1990).
Speech rehabilitation can help dysarthrics to speak more
intelligibly. Actually carefully planned therapy program can
minimize the frustrations and maximize the patient’s feeling
of making progress (Gentil, 1993).
A protocol for assessment of dysarthria was structured
and applied in phoniatric Unit, Ain Shams University (Kotby
et al., 1995). It comprises three levels; elementary diagnostic
procedures, clinical diagnostic aids and additional
instrumental measures.
This protocol was applied before and after the therapy
to detect the efficacy of this type of rehabilitation in viewing
the significant improvement of dysarthric patients. This was
applied to 52 patients of different types of dysarthria.
