Abstract

Charles Dickens is that kind of writer who has great capacity for mirroring his society and criticizing it. His novels are quite unparalleled celebrations of the everyday and the domestic, the transformation of the incidents of common life into great art Victorian society passed such a great transition that completely affected the life of everyone at that time. Dickens witnessed this period and successfully pictures it in his novels. Reading Dickens, Hard Times, Great Expectations, Dombey and Son , and Oliver Twist, one can easily notice that the main theme of them is the conflict between love and money .In almost all Dickens novels, there is atension between the world of money with its greed, self-interest, affectation, and show, and that of love with its sincerity, goodness, and emotions. In Hard Times, money, or the lack of it, is at the centre of the story. Gradgrind, belonging to the world of money, ruins the lives of his children. Tom attempts to rob Boundary’s bank since he has learnt at his father’s school that money is power. Louisa sells herself for the dreadful Bounderby because she obeys her father’s factual words, and also because she wants to help Tom in his career Money not only controls people’s lives, but also corrupts their souls. By the end, most of those who deny love come to recognize its importance in life. Gradgrind finds that love is more important than the facts and the money of the whole world. Money may win at the beginning, but love always wins by the end.In Great Expectations, everyone, even those who belong to the world of money, badly needs love.
