Abstract Radiofrequency catheter ablation is an effective treatment strategy of paroxysmal and persistent atrial fibrillation. • The ablation technique guided by both CARTOTM XP navigation system and Lasso catheter has better long term outcome and less complication rate than ablation guided by either of them alone. • Catheter ablation of atrial fibrillation is relatively safe procedure. • Pericardial effusion/tamponade, thromboembolism and pulmonary vein stenosis are infrequent complications of this procedure. • The incidence of complications decreases with more experience of the procedure and with the use of CARTOTM navigation system (especially pulmonary vein stenosis) Implementation of radiofrequency catheter ablation as an effective treatment strategy of drug-refractory symptomatic atrial fibrillation. • AF ablation strategy should be guided by both CARTO navigation system and Lasso catheter whenever possible. • Proper selection of patients for AF ablation prior to considering catheter ablation. • Larger, prospective, randomized and blinded studies are needed to accurately evaluate the efficacy of different AF ablation techniques, pre- procedural predictors of recurrence and complication rate. • Accurate and thorough documentation of all the details of every single catheter ablation procedure, to help further studies and prevent the loss of valuable data. |
