Abstract Two experiments were performed at Sids experimental Station at Beni-Suef Governorate during the two successive winter seasons of 1998 — 1999 and 1999 — 2000 to investigate the effect of some intercropping methods on the growth and yield of some vegetable crops. 1- First experiment : Onion, Giza 6 CV. was planted as a main crop in three times i.e.; 30th September, 15 October and 1’ November. Onion was planted solely or intercropped with spinach CV. Balady or lettuce CV. Balady where they were planted on the top of onion rides. Theree Nitrogen fertilizer levels were used i.e.; 90 kg N/Fedd, 120 kg N/Fedd and 150 kg N/Feddan. Data were recorded at harvest to reveal the effect of intercropping, nitrogen fertilizer levels and planting date, on growth and yield of onion, spinach and lettuce in two successive seasons. 2- Second experiment : Cabbage Brunswick CV.of Denemark was planted as a main crop on two spaces [ inter-row and intra-row i.e.; 50 or 70 cm apart between cabbage plant and 60 or 70 cm between rows (row width). Snap bean Narina CV. was intercropped with onion in five alternating arrangements, i.e.; planting onion snap bean solely alone or intercropped at 1:1 , 1:2 , 2:1 and 2:2 ridges of cabbage : snap bean . 170 SUMMARY AND CONCLUSSION Data were recorded at harvesting to investigate the effect of intercropping, inter-row and intra-row on the growth and yield of cabbage and snap bean crop, in two successive seasons. Treatments of the two experiments were arranged in split-split plots design in complete randomized blocks with four replicates . The obtained data may be summerized as follow: 1- Intercropping caused significant decreases in yields of the companion crops in planting as well as growth, yield component, total yield, T.S.S., RGR, nutrient percentage nutrient uptake when compared with planting in pure stand. 2- Intercropping significantly affcted L.E.R (land, equivalent ratio). 3- Intercropping significantly affected the supplementaion of N.P.K in all companion crops and some characteras such as total soluble solid, nitrogen uptake, phosphorus uptake and potassium uptake in lettuce crop. 4- Different planting date of onion had significantn effects on plant height, relative growth rate, Neck diameter, bulb diameter, bulbing ratio , bulb weight, Bulb size , total soluble solids, total carbohydrates, nitrogen uptake, phosphorous uptake and potassium uptake of onion crop when intercropped with lettuce spinach crops. 5- In spinach crop, leaf area , leaf area index, dry weight total soluble solids, total carbohydrates, potassium percentage, nitrogen uptake , phosphorus uptake and potassium uptake 171 SUMMARY AND CONCLUSSION were significantly affected by planting dates when intercropped with onion. 6- Lettuce intercropped with onion, was affected by various planting date of onion, where in plant height total yield, dry matter, total soluble solid, total carbohydrates, and N.P.K supplementation index, were significantly affected by planting date . 7- Fertilization with nitrogen levels, revealed that the high level of N 150 kg N/Feddan were significantly affected on plant height, relative growth rate, total yield , neck diameter, bulb diameter, bulb ratio, bulb weight, bulb size, dry weight, T.S.S (total soluble solid) , total charbohydrate, N.P.K percentage and uptake of onion plants intercropped with spinach or lettuce. 8- Nitrogen levels of 150 kg N/Feddan significantly affected plant height , number of leaves, leaf area, leaf area index, total yield , dry weught, total soluble solids, total carbohydrate, nitrogen percentage, phosphorus percentage , potassium percentage and N.P.K uptake of spinach plants when intercropped with onion crop. 9- Lettuce plants characters as plant heigh, leaf area , leafs area index, total yield , total charbohydrate , total soluble solid, dry matter , N.P.K percentages and N.P.K uptake were significantly highest with N level of 150 Kg N/Feddan. 10- Supplementation index of onion intercropped with spinach or lettuce was significantly affected by nitrogen levels and planting 172 SUMMARY AND CONCLUSSION dates of onion At 150 kg N/Feddan and planting on the 1st of November for lettuce or spinach . 11- Total yield of onion intercropped with lettuce was greater and better in quality than onion intercropped with spinach . 12- The arrangement of intercropping onion with spinach was more advantage than intercropping onion + lettuce . 13- Land equivalent ratio of onion with spinach was more than onion with lettuce . Second experiment : 1- Wide inter and intra spacing i.e.; ridge width of 70 cm at 70 cm apart between cabbage plants , significantly affected in leaf area , leaf area index, plant height, total yield , dry weight per plant , total carbohydrates , N.P.K percentages and N.P.K uptake of snap bean plants intercropped with cabbage . 2- Intercropping methods (1:1) , (1:2) , (2:1) , and (2:2) had insignificant effect on leaf area index, pod diameter, pod length pod weight , Hawever, significant effect was found on leaf area, plant height, total yield , dry weight per plant , dry weight percentage , total carbohydrates , N.P.K percentage and N.P.K uptake by plants in snap bean intercropped with cabbage at the ratio of 2 snap bean : 1 cabbage or 2 : 2 intercropping system . 3- In regards to cabbage, the wide space of 70 cm between cabbage plants significantly affected on total yield (ton /Feddan ), head height, head diameter , head weight , dry 173 SUMMARY AND CONCLUSSION weight persentage , phosphorus and potassium percentages and N.P.K uptake in cabbage plants intercropped with snap bean. 4- Intercropping methods (1:1) , (1:2) , (2:1) and (2:2) significantly affected on total yield, Head height, head diameter, head weight, dry weight, total carbohyrates, N.P.K percentage and N.P.K uptake of cabbage with highest values were obtained with the (1:1) or (2:1) with snap bean in the intercropping system. 5- Land equivalement ratio (L.E.R) was more advantage in the (1:1) and (1:2) of cabbage: snap bean, respectively . 6- Data of the relative crowding coefficient showed that the (1:1) and (2:1) as intercropping system mor benefit in cost and gave significant effect on this character. |
