Abstract

The study showed that the Eastern Harbor sediments contained high percentage of sands ranged between 81.9 and 100%. Organic carbon content ranged between 0.27 and 5.18 with an average of 2.09%. The content of the non-humic substances ranged between 0.57 to 37.22 %. The content of humic acid ranged between 5.38 and 40.77% and it is higher than that of fulvic acid. The main infrared spectra of absorption bands of humic and fulvic acid indicated the hydrogen bonded groups, free OH, C—H stretching, stretching nitriles, Alkyl and Aryl, stretching of C=0 in carboxylic acid, cyclic and aldehyde and ketones, quinine, C=C, stretching vibration of double bonds in cyclic compounds, aliphatic C-H and salts of carboxylic acids indicated 1: 2: 3 substitutions on aromatic compounds deformations. The UV spectra indicated the presence of aromatic system. The E41E6 ratio indicated less maturity of fulvic acid. The C/N ratio indicated lower degree of condensation and more aliphatic nature of fulvic acid. The highest recorded contents of all trace metals concentrations in humic and fulvic acid were of Fe and of Mn.
