Abstract Out of 173 White Lohmann chickens obtained from different poultry farms in Menoufiya governorate (Birkt El-Sabaa, Quesna and El-Shohadaa). Clinical signs were non specific to MD and a number of chickens showed nervous manifestation. The age of affected examined chickens was from 19-31 weeks old. The overall mortality for 13 weeks was 34.2%. Grossly tumors in the internal organs ware seen including, the liver 68.8% (119/173), spleen 66.5% (115/173), kidneys 62.4% (108/173), ovary 74.6% (129/173), proventriculus 53.8% (93/173), heart 4.04% (7/173), intestine 12.7% (22/173), muscle 6.4% (11/173), sciatic nerves 36.4% (63/173) and pancreas showed no gross lesion. Using PCR, an amplified product size with a double 132 bp repeat which is 434 was obtained. Microscopically pleomorphic lymphoid cells infiltration (small, medium and large lymphocytes) in the different internal organs were found including, the liver 87.86% (152/173), spleen 72.25% (125/173), kidneys 78.61% (136/173), ovary 90.75% (157/173), proventriculus 68.78% (119/173), heart 21.96% (38/173), intestine 28.32% (49/173), muscle 8.9% (14/173), nerves 49.71% (86/173) and pancreas 3.5% (6/173). By electron microscopy, margination and clumping of chromatin in the inner nuclear membrane of most lymphocyte. Also, naked herpesvirus-like particles were seen in the nucleus. |
