Abstract

Summary
Care for bladder cancer is a professional responsibility of nurses and one of their important function, by virtue of her professional license a nurse has the right to teach the person how to detect bladder cancer early by medical investigation such as urine cytology periodically especially those person whom consider as the high risk groups for early detection and management (69, 70). Also the nurses play an important role in caring for the patient undergoing cystectomy and urinary diversion during pre and postoperative period and the follow up care. So the aim of this study is to assess the nurse’s knowledge and performance toward care of cystectomized patient. To accomplish this aim, 35 diploma nurses working in the urology department and urology oncology unit at Assiut university hospital were included in the study as the study group all nurses working with bladder cancer patient who undergoing cystectomy and urinary diversion. Data was collected through interviewing questionnaire developed to assess nurse’s information in relation to bladder cancer and the care given to cystectomized patient postoperative and during the follow up care.
Moreover observation checklist sheet was developed to assess the nurses’ performance post cystectomy.
The results obtained from the study showed the following:
1-The sample consists of 35 male and female diploma nurses (17 males and 18 female).
2-The study found that (42.9 %) of the sample from the urology department and (57.1 %) from urology oncology unit.
3-The study found that (45.7 %) of the total number of the nurses were more than 5 years of experience and (54.3 %) less than 5 years of experience. It was found that (42.9 %) single nurses and (57.1 %) married nurses (male and female).
4-There was statistical significance in nurses’ knowledge and performance about care of cystectomized patient between urology department and urology oncology unit. Also there was statistical significant in nurses knowledge and performance in relation to years of experience.
5-About (45.3 %) of all nurses get satisfactory knowledge but (82.5%) give unsatisfactory score regarding nursing care post cystectomy.
6-There are some main items as regard nurses activities for patient post cystectomy are neglected from most nurses. These items, include, check level of consciousness, suction of endotrachhial tube, check the dressing, and check the nails bed
