Abstract Training is a mean of equipping employees to perform competently in their present or future jobs, so as to increase their job satisfaction and efficiency of the organization. In-service education for nursing personnel is needed as a valid method for continuous updating and renewal of knowledge and skills to maintain and improve competence. Nurses in Assiut University Hospital have never received any training concerning their work, in spite it was found that one of the most effective ways of investing human resources is to train people in order to improve their performance in their jobs. In this study the researcher tried to investigate and identify the needs for developing and implementing and in-service education program designed toward improving the knowledge and skills of nurses working in surgical departments in relation to aseptic techniques and principles of sterilization. The aim and objectives of the study were: 1-To assess the training needs of nursing personnel working in surgical departments in relation to aseptic techniques and principles of sterilization. 2-To plan and develop an in-service education program for nurses based on the needs assessment. 3-To implement and evaluate the program and its impact on the nurses performance in applying the gained knowledge and skills. The needs assessment for developing the program was determined by the following methods: A-In order to assess the nurses knowledge working in surgical departments in Assiut University Hospital. 1) A structured interview questionnaire form was developed and used for nurses to assess nurses knowledge regarding principles of aseptic techniques and principles and methods of sterilization. 2) A structured interview questionnaire form was developed and used for physicians to assess their opinions regarding nurses’ knowledge and performance in relation to aseptic techniques and principles and methods of sterilization, and nurses needs for attending an in-service training program in their field. B-In order to achieve the objectives of the study related to assessing the nurses performance related to aseptic techniques, principles and methods of sterilization. An observational check list was constructed by the researcher which included the steps used in the performance of the following selected nursing procedures. 1) Hand washing. 2) Preparation of dressing cart. 3) Change of wound dressing. 4) Sterilization of supplies and instruments. |
