Abstract

Respiratory tract infection is a frequent cause of acute illness for infants and children. Many pediatric infections are seasonal. The child’s response to the infection will vary based on the age of the child’s causative organisms, general health of the child, existence of chronic medical conditions, and degree of contact with other children.
Acute respiratory infections (ARI) account for about 4000.000 deaths per year in children under 5 years of age throughout the world. The majority of these deaths are due to pneumonia.
In Egypt, the infant mortality rate has been dramatically lowered during the last decade from 87 deaths per 1000 live births in 1983 to 43.1% in 1991. Presently ARI deaths account for 30% of all infant deaths. Longitudinal studies in urban areas indicate that the average Egyptian child has fronm 5 to 8 ARI episodes per year.
The nurse has an important role in obtaining a complete health history giving particular attention to the history of the illness. The nurse also gathers sufficient data to recommend the mode of therapy (oral or intramuscular)that would be most appropriate for the particular family.
The aim of this study was to determine the needs of nurses about respiratory infection for young children in order to design, implement and evaluate the impact of a training programme on their knowledge and practice.
