Abstract

The study in Beni-Swief chest hospital during the period March 2009 to March 2010 revealed that;
There were 120 tuberculous patients, 80% of them were pulmonary tuberculosis and 20% were extra pulmonary tuberculosis.

The total number of male patients was 59 with a percentage of 49.2% while the total number of female patients was 61 with a percentage of 50.8%.
The total number of cured patients was 87, 29 patients were completed treatment, 3 patients were defaulters, and one had treatment failure.

The newly diagnosed tuberculous cases were 117 cases and represent (97.6%) and the retreated cases were 3 cases and represent (2.4%).

The main presenting symptoms of tuberculosis were fever representing (96.6%).
Incidence of tuberculosis was high in,
The age group 15-45 years (59.2%).
Rural (77.5%).
Married (67.5%).
Uneducated (66.3%).
Family size had 3-5 members(45%).
Housewives (40.8%).
Rate of treatment succses was high in,
Female.
Urban.
Educated.
Unmarried.
Retreatment cases.
Family size had 1-3 members.
The age group 1-14 years.
Patients had not chronic diseases.
Negative pulmonary TB and extrapulmonary.
Patients had knowledge regarding TB (complications, prevention).
Rate of defaulters was high in,
Male.
Rural.
Married.
New cases.
Uneducated.
Positive pulmonary TB.
The age group 15-45 years.
Patients had chronic diseases.
Family size had >5 members.
Patients had family TB history.
Patients had not knowledge regarding TB (complications, prevention).
