Abstract

Asthma is the most common chronic disease among children, with a significant increase in its prevalence , especially in recent decades .
Asthma education is one of the most effective and long lasting interventions in the management of asthma. It is a powerful tool for helping patients gain the motivation, skill, and confidence to control their asthma. Patient education is the mechanism through which patients learn to accomplish those tasks successfully.
This study was conducted at Tanta Chest Hospital Outpatient Clinic and included one hundred children, 5 -14 years old, and their families in the period of ( 2009- 2010 )
The study was done to study the impact of the educational session on management of asthmatic children
The study revealed that asthma educational session has a positive impact on management of asthmatic children in the form of:
1- Reduction in the number of days with asthma symptoms from 1.7± 0.9 in the first visit to 1.0± 0.9in the sixth follow up visit
2- Reduction in the number of nights disturbed by asthma symptoms from 0.4± 0.6 in the first visit to 0.1± 0.3 in the sixth follow up visit
3- Decrease in the number of children restricted physical activity and school absences days due to asthma symptoms from 0.4± 0.7 in the first follow up visit to 0.2 ± 0.4 in the six follow up visit
4- Decrease in the number of unscheduled doctors visits for asthma from 44 / 100 child / month in the first follow up visit to 21 / 100 child / month in the six follow up visit
5- Decrease in mean of the use of quick-relief medication from Mean 2.8 ±1.7 in the first follow up visit to 1.9 ±1.8 in the six follow up visit
6-Decrease in number of asthma attacks ( 44% ) in the first follow up visit to ( 33% ) in the six follow up visit
7- Improved perception of asthma control level by the patient and the family. In the first follow up visit the perception of asthma control was{ not well controlled was ( 29 % ), some what controlled was ( 31 % ), very well controlled was ( 40 % )} while in the six follow up visit the level of asthma control was{ not well controlled was ( 20 % ), some what controlled was ( 21 % ), very well controlled was ( 59 % )}
8- improvement of the level of satisfaction with asthma care . In the first follow up visit the level of satisfaction was ( not satisfied was 27% , some what satisfied was 32%, quite satisfied was 41% ) , while in the six follow up visit the level of satisfaction was ( not satisfied was 19% , some what satisfied was 18%, quite satisfied was 63% )
In conclusion, the present study showed that an educational session provided by the treating physician during the first visit to chest clinic could improve the outcome of asthma management plan in children with bronchial asthma
