Abstract The present study investigated the effectiveness of using some translation strategies (synonyms, antonyms, illustrations, and examples) in developing Al Azhar first year secondary institutes students’ knowledge and use of Islamic vocabulary (n=100). The tools used in this study included an inventory of the needed Islamic vocabulary skills for the group of the study, a pre-post test in knowledge and use of Islamic vocabulary and a training program in knowledge and use of Islamic vocabulary. The experiment lasted for a month. Results revealed that using the selected translation strategies is effective in developing knowledge and use of Islamic vocabulary of Al Azhar first year secondary institutes’ students, and that there is a positive correlation between the group of the study’s scores in the tests of knowledge and use of Islamic vocabulary. In the light of the results of the study, some recommendations were suggested for developing the group of the study’s knowledge and use of Islamic vocabulary, for providing the designers of English language curricula at Al Azhar secondary stage with a procedural model of using the selected translation strategies that can be used for developing EFL Islamic vocabulary, For providing Al Azhar EFL teachers with some materials on teaching Islamic vocabulary through using the selected translation strategies, and for EFL further research.
