Abstract
The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of application of the plate on either lateral or medial surfaces of the tibial diaphysis on the outcome of the procedure of open reduction and internal fixation of fractures of the tibial shaft.This study included sixty one patients with closed tibial diaphyseal fracture presented to Elhadra Universal Hospital in the period from January 2004 to January 2007 treated by open reduction and internal fixation by plate and screws.Forty two male patients (69%), and nineteen female patients (31%), were included in this study.The minimum age of the patients was fifteen years, and the maximum age was seventy eight years with the mean age thirty seven years +16.9.Direct trauma was the cause of fracture in four patients (6.6%), fall was the cause in five patients (8.2%), while the major cause was RTA in fifty two patients (85.2%).The position of the plate was on the medial surface in thirty two patients (52.5%), on the lateral surface in twenty nine patients (47.5%).Bony union was found in forty eight patients (79%), while non- union was found in thirteen patients (21%).The overall results were satisfactory in 48/61(79%) patients, and unsatisfactory in13/61 (21%) patients.Post-operative surgical wound was found to be clean in forty three patients (70.5%), deep infection found in eighteen patients (29.5%).Twenty four patients who gained satisfactory results the plate was applied on the medial surface 50%,and the same number and percentage on the lateral surface.
