Abstract

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of integrating the direct and indirect approaches on developing conversation skills among secondary school students. The study had a pre-post experimental control group design. The sample of the study comprised (58) first year secondary school students. They were randomly assigned to experimental group (N=29) and control group (N=29). Tools included a conversation skills list required for secondary school students and a pre-post test based on the list mentioned above. Both groups were pre and post tested using the English language conversation skills test .A conversation development program (CDP) was developed based on the integration of the two approaches. Subjects of the experimental group were instructed by the researcher herself using the integration between the direct and indirect approaches, whereas, the control group subjects received the regular EFL curriculum. Findings of the study revealed that students’ conversation skills improved as a result of using the (CDP) based on integrating the direct and indirect approaches of teaching conversation. Finally, the study carried important implications and suggestions for further research.
