Abstract The study was carried out on Nile tilapia Oreochromis niloticus (0. niloticus) where the effect of the most dominant cyanobacterium which is Microcystis aeruginosa was studied on this specie. Fish were exposed to live cells of toxic and non-toxic Microcystis aeruginosa and the clinical signs, post-mortem changes, grazing rate on M aeruginosa, heamatological parameters, histopathological findings were recorded. The grazing rates were nearly similar in treatment and control groups. The clinical signs observed in treatment group were sluggish movement and reduced reflexes, post-mortem changes were congestion in liver, kidney and brain in addition to enlarged spleen, gonads. The AST, thyroxine, creatinine, glucose, cortisol were markedly increased in treatment group while total protein was decreases in this group. However, ALP, LDH and albumin were not increased significantly. The liver showed congestion and coagulative necrosis, kidney showed necrosis in tubular epithelium and there were necrotic changes in spleen, brain, gonads, skeletal muscles and intestine where gills showed lamellar congestion, hyperplasia and fusion. |
