Abstract

This work was carried out to study the health status of some laboratory animals
(rats, mice, guinea-pigs, hamsters and frogs) in some Egyptian scientific institutes
and investigating the type of microorganisms that may harbor and can be
transmitted to man and also study the role of laboratory animal handlers
(veterinarians, technicians, ... ) in transmitting some bacterial and parasitic agents
to laboratory animals. The isolated bacteria were Salmonella spp., Proteus spp.,
Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli, Yersinia enterocolitica,
Staphylocoocus aureus and Listeria spp. However, The detected parasites were
Entamoeba spp., Giardia lamblia, Hymenolepis spp. and fleas. The results
proved that affected laboratory animals possessed a zoonotic risk to contact
personnel and vice versa.
