Abstract

from a total of 140 layer breeder hens (Eisa brown) 248 samples tested, 12 (4.8%) were Salmonella positive. The isolates were belonging to S. Makumira (n = 3) (25%), S. Enteritidis (n = 2) (16.6%), S. Kentucky (n = 2) (16.6%), S. Braenderup (n = 1) (8.3%), S. Heidelberg (n = 2) (16.6%), S. Typhi (n = 1) (8.3%) and S. Amounderness (n = 1) (8.3%). from a total 119 wild rats (Rattus Rattus) captured from the same farm 159 samples tested 6 were Salmonella positive. The isolates were belonging to S. Typhimurium (n = 2), (33.3%), S. Enteritidis (n = 2) (33.3%), S. Braendersup (n = 1) (16.6%) and S. Makumira (n = 1) (16.6%). And from a total 82 eggs tested, 2 (2.43%) were positive for Salmonella (isolated from egg yolk). The isolates were belonging to S. Enteritidis (n = 1) (50%) and S. Kentucky (n = 1) (50%). All isolates recovered were highly sensitive to chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, Enrofloxacin, Norfloxacin, Flumequin and Gentamicin and resistant to Ampicillin and Amoxicillin, while Cephaloxin and Nalidixic acid moderately effective against recovered serovars.
