Abstract

The study in Fayoum chest hospital in the period from June 2006 to June 2009 revealed that;
There were 625 tuberculous patients, 84.2% of them were pulmonary tuberculosis and 15.8% were extra pulmonary tuberculosis.
The total number of male patients was 329 with a percentage of 52.6% while the total number of female patients was 296 patients.
Incidence of tuberculosis was high in the age group 20-29 years (35%) and low in the extremities of age.
Classification of tuberculous patients according to occupation revealed that the highest percentage of tuberculosis was among housewives (unemployed) and farmers 47.3%, 24.8%.
Classification of tuberculous patients according to their reference showed that Patients attended by their own will were the highest with a percentage of 55.84%.
There were 432 cases (82.1%) were diagnosed by direct smear as positive cases and 51 cases (8.16%) were diagnosed by sputum culture.
Radiological findings revealed that far advanced lesions constitute higher percentage and were 289 cases (51%), moderate advanced lesions were 105 cases (18.5%) and minimal advanced lesions were 173 cases (30.5%).
The main presenting symptoms of tuberculosis were cough and expectoration representing (49.6%).
The newly diagnosed tuberculous cases were 577 cases and represent (92.32%) and the retreated cases were 77 cases and represent (7.68%).
The study revealed that pleurisy is the commonest complication affecting the studied group who were 41 patients and represent (6.6%).
Most of extra pulmonary cases were tuberculous pleural effusion (41.4%) ,tuberculous lymphadenitis cases were (28.3%) ,tuberculosis of bone cases were (15.2% ) ,tuberculous peritonitis cases were (5%) ,uterine tuberculosis cases were (6.1%) and skin tuberculosis cases were (4%)
Sputum examination by direct smear on discharge for patients with pulmonary tuberculosis revealed that 493 patients were sputum negative for AFB, while one patient was positive, the rest were inaccessible.
The total number of cured patients was 495, 102 patients were completed treatment, 9 patients were defaulters, 13 patients were transferred to other hospitals and number of deaths was 7.
The total number of tuberculous patients was highest in Fayoum city (147) due to the high crowdness, followed by ABSHWAY (138), followed by ITSA (128), followed by TAMIA (124), then Sanuoris (88).
