Abstract

Auditory temporal processing disorders may have detrimental consequences on a child’s life, if undiagnosed and untreated. Precise diagnosis of ATPDs is of great importance for proper remediation of affected children. The AFT-R and the GIN are essentially the only two clinically applicable true measures of temporal resolution. The availability of age specific data enables clinician to monitor child’s performance over time.
Sixty normal and twenty five CAPD children were included in this study. All children were evaluated using Arabic version of the Scale of Auditory Behaviors (SAB), then speech in noise, dichotic digits, and pitch pattern sequence tests; these three central tests were applied to confirm normal central auditory pathway in normal children and as a part of central test battery in CAPD children. Lastly, both GIN (Musiek, 2005) and AFT (Keith, 2000) tests were applied.
In this work, both GIN and AFT have been standardized on normal Egyptian children. It was found that there was no improvement in GIN scores with age. However, AFT scores showed significant improvement in subgroups II & III comparing to subgroup I. Both tests scores were then compared in CAPD children aiming to study their correlation and test’s ability to detect auditory temporal resolution affection. It was found that both tests were correlated. However, GIN test showed more abnormal scores than AFT this may be attributed to different stimuli (i.e tones v. noise), the response task (verbal counting v. motoric), and measure derived (i.e shortest inter-pulse interval that results in perception of one tones v. perception of silent gaps in noise).
The Scale of Auditory Behaviors (SAB) showed reduced scores in the CAPD children comparing with normal children. Both tests scores were not correlated with the SAB as it assesses all central abilities not pertinent to the timing disorders.
GIN test is a true gap detection procedure, with consistent low variability. Thus, it is recommended to be applied in the central clinic as a promising alternative tool to AFT in diagnosing children with timing disorders especially when the complaint is suggestive.
