Abstract

H. pylori is a microaerophilic, small, spiral, highly motile, Gram negative bacillus that colonizes the mucous layer of the stomach and the oral cavity. It has been recognized as the main cause of peptic ulcer and in 1994, H. pylori has been classified as class Ι carcinogen for the development of gastric cancer. However most infected people (>70%) are asymptomatic and the infection once acquired is believed to last the whole entire life.
The aim of the current study was to diagnose H. pylori infection by different modalities in gastric biopsy and saliva with dental plaque samples. Also to detect H. pylori antigen in stool and do susceptibility pattern to some selected antibiotics.
H. pylori isolates were almost completely resistant to metronidazole, however, sensitivity to amoxicillin was very evident, followed by amoxicillin clavulinic, clarithromycin, then, ampicillin salbactam and tetracycillin.
H. pylori infection is a common and dangerous health problem. Therefore, the development of specific tests to diagnose H. pylori is recommended. Also effective eradication is essential to prevent the development of gastric cancer.
