Abstract

The practice of satellite photogrammetric map compilation embraces the techniques and processes involved in extracting geometric features and most semantic features required for the production of topoqraphic maps. Photogrammetrists, as usual, proceed with aerial photography, scanning aerial films, constructing ground controls, aerial triangulation and then map compilation. Today the use of satellite images for producing topographic maps is not a standard practice in topographic mapping in most of developing countries. Despite the fact that satellite images are progressively improving in spatial resolution and location accuracy.
This thesis aim to explore the viability of using satellite images in producing topographic maps. A case study was considered which included three PAN SPOT-5 stereo-pairs each of them covers the chosen study area, located in sinai peninsula. of these stereo pairs, two are SPOT-5 HRG across-track multi-date with resolutions of 2.5 m and 5 m. For thses two pairs the HRG1 sensor had acqired the two left scenes of both stereo-pairs in 2002 while the two right scenes were acquired by the HRG2 in 2003.The third stereo pair is a spot -5 HRS along-track same-date of resolution 10x5m, which was acquired, by the two HRS1 and HRS2 sensors in 2003.
The first objective of interest was the study of the effect of the number and distribution of CPs on the obtained accuracy. A total of nine CPs, of which seven are aerial triangulated and two are field measured, were used. These CPs constituted four patterens that were experimentally tested in the SPOT-5 HRG 2.5m stereo-pair.The two lower resolution HRG 5 m and HRS 10x5 m stereo -pairs were traingulated by automatic matching technique with the already traingulated HRG 2.5m stereo-pair.
Three pilot areas with different topographies were different topographies were selected for testing satellite photogrammetric map compliation, which is one of the main objectives of this research. The socet set and ARCGIS were used for digital photogrammetric mapping tasks.Nine topographic maps were complied digitally for the three pilot areas; three maps for each area. For analysis purposes, the already available 1:50.000 topogrphic maps were digitized on screen by ARCGIS.
