Abstract

Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a chronic non suppurative inflammation in middle ear cleft; it is the most common cause of conductive hearing loss in children.
Mucolytic drugs are widely used in management of secretory otitis media, in this study we determine if the mucolytis have a role in management of secretory otitis media in children or not.
We analyzed randomized control trials (by using meta-analysis) of the published literature concerning the use of mucolytics in the treatment of secretory otitis media in children through searching the Medline data base (www.Pubmed.com). Meta-analysis is a systematic approach to identify, appraise and synthesize, and (if appropriate) combine the results of relevant studies to arrive at conclusion.
Regarding the material of this study, search was done on10/1/2009 and updated on 11/10/2009 using the following key words:
1-secretory otitis media, children
2- otitis media with effusion, mucolytics
3-secretory otits media, mucolytics
The search was limited to articles published in English language and performed on human subjects.
It yielded a total number of 3188 articles. After elimination of the irrelevant articles, we had a total number of 37 articles which are relevant to our study, of which there were 33 excluded articles in our study, 4 of them were randomized controlled trials, but were excluded because of absence of one or more of our inclusion criteria, so we used. Only 4 articles that fulfill all inclusion criteria.
Our analytical study showed that there was no significance of the resolution rate in children with secretory otitis media with effusion by using mucolytic drugs in comparing to placebo.
So we can concluded that there no value of using mucolytic drugs in the treatment of secretory otitis media in children.
