Changes in blood level of a number of different trace elements have been reported in children with chronic renal failure. Special care had been given to copper and zinc because trace elements are key components of many enzymatic pathways and proteins in the body metabolism. Zinc is an essential trace element and has been received increasing attention because of the recent evidence indicating that its deficiency may have grave consequences in humans as it is required to maintain the normal structure and/or functions of multiple enzymes, including those involved in the transcription and translation of genetic material and cell division. Zinc deficiency leads to immune deficiency and susceptibility to infections, as well as that zinc is used in the prevention and treatment of diarrhea in children with chronic renal failure. Chronic cupper poisoning leads to neutropenia, anemia, osteopenia and liver disorders.
Objectives: The aim of the work was to evaluate the serum zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) levels in children with chronic renal failure. Study was submitted on patients in the Nephrology Unit of Zagazig University Pediatric Hospital. Group A: 20 children with chronic renal failure (ESRD) who were on regular hemodialysis. Group B: 20 children with CRF who were on conservative management. Group C: 10 healthy children (control group).
