Abstract

Femoral neck fractures in young adults (15-50 years) need to be recognized as unique injury different from the common geriatric hip fracture. These are high momentum injuries often the result of motor vehicle accidents or falls from heights as opposed to falls from standing in the older population.
High rates of nonunion and/or osteonecrosis can be reduced with anatomic or near-anatomic reduction. In general, a femoral neck fracture in young adults is considered a fracture with priority with high rate of failure if treatment is delayed.
The Pauwels and Garden classification system are most common applied for femoral neck fractures. The Garden classification system attempts to recognize the significance of radiographic appearance of the varying stages of displacement.
Surgical options for the management of femoral neck fracture are closely linked to individual patient factors and to the location and degree of fracture displacement. Methods of surgical treatment are internal fixation, hemi- or total arthroplasty.
The aim of this work is to review the recent trends in the management of recent fracture neck femur in young adults.
