Abstract

Chronic heart failure (CHF) is becoming one of the greatest health challenges during the past and next decades besides medical and nursing management, and drug therapy. Efficient treatment of CHF must also include quality of life attention. This study aim was to determine the changes in quality of life (QoL) for patients with congestive heart failure, and the relation between domains. A descriptive explorative design was utilized to conduct the study. Methods: In this study, 100 patients, from both sexes and with age ranging between 35 – 65 were the study was conducted at male and female cardiology departments in Zagazig University Hospitals assessed by QoL index. Subject with any other chronic illness such as D.M., Ischemic heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were excluded. Tools used for data collection included 1) Patient Interview Questionnaire Sheet, and 2) Cardiac Quality of Life questionnaire sheet (quality of life index). Results revealed that there were changes in overall QoL and QoL subscales in patients with CHF. There were positive relations between all aspects of quality of life and there were statistically significant relation between QoL and sex, age residence, occupation, number of children and crowding index. CHF patients had changes in physical, socioeconomical, psychological/spiritual and family quality of life. There is a need to follow up for quality of life and using programs that contribute in improving their QoL, and to supply cardiac units with psychotherapists and social workers to assess patients’ needs and intervene with them also Further researches are needed to detect other factors that effect on CHF patients such as the effect of drugs on QoL and HRQoL.
