In this thesis, the problem of designing adaptive approximation-based control schemes for highly uncertain nonlinear systems based on fuzzy logic systems as a function approximator is addressed. The thesis focuses on the so-called backstepping design approach. The backstepping design is a recursive Lyapunov-based nonlinear control scheme. Within this approach the construction of the feedback control law is systematic. The major advantage of the backstepping design approach is that it can be used to relax the matching conditions and it has the flexibility to avoid cancellation of useful nonlinearities and achieve stabilization and tracking properties. In the thesis, the universal approximation capabilities of fuzzy logic systems and feedback linearization technique are first integrated to develop simple adaptive control systems that are necessary for consistency of the presentation. Based on these initial results, the thesis presents extensive studies on designing adaptive fuzzy approximation-based nonlinear control schemes using the backstepping design approach for single-input single-output, multi-input multi-output, and large-scale nonlinear systems.
