Abstract

Older people are remarkable in their heterogeneity. As a group, older adults have become more culturally, ethnically and racially diverse and better educated. Although recent studies have shown a decline in chronic illness and disability associated with advanced age, most of the older persons can expect to experience a chronic illness in later years. Approximately 85% of persons 65 years old and older have at least one chronic illness and 60% of those over 85 have two or more chronic illnesses. Many elderly persons encounter significant functional limitations (Cobbs et al., 1998).
The most characteristic feature of research process is its cyclic nature. The generalization ending one cycle is the opening of the next cycle. This cyclic process continues indefinitely reflecting the progress of scientific discipline. It is for this reason that generalizations need to be available so as to go through continuous testing and evaluation and to build up more generalizations with the next cycle of research Publication is therefore the goal of scientific research. A scientific experiment, no matter how spectacular the results, is not completed until the results are published. In fact, the cornerstone of the philosophy of science is based on fundamental assumption that original research must be published (Reason & Rowan, 1989).
One of the most important subjects that have been discussed by researches performed in the Geriatric Department is neuro-psychiatric diseases as they are major causes of morbidity and mortality especially among elderly population and neuro-psychiatric risk increases with age. The challenge to the clinical and research communities alike is to delineate the appropriate components of preventive, diagnostic and therapeutic care for elderly neuro-psychiatric patients in our society, interventions that are likely to relieve suffering, restore function so as to limit disability and dependency and maintain a dignified and meaningful lifestyle for the end years of life.
The aim of this study was to declare subjects in neuro-psychiatric diseases in elderly that have not been discussed yet by researches done in Geriatric Department, Ain Shams University in order to put a preliminary plan for future researches in neuro-psychiatric disease in elderly.
In this study researches that were performed in Geriatric department at Ain Shams University concerning neuro-psychiatric diseases in elderly population were gathered and an abstract was formed for each of these studies.
The international research data on the common neuro-psychiatric diseases in elderly was reviewed by searching on the peer-reviewed http://www.pubmed.com website. These data were used to demonstrate subjects involving neuro-psychiatric disease in elderly that were not discussed by the geriatric department, Ain Shams University.
It was concluded that many subjects have not been discussed yet by the Geriatric department at Ain Shams University and these subjects can be used as a guide for future neuro-psychiatric research. This study also reveals that different methods can be used in researches about neuro-psychiatric diseases.
In recommendation, there should be systemic planning, research team, good funding for future researches that will be done in Geriatric department at Ain Shams University
