Abstract

Schistosomiasis is one of the oldest and most widespread parasitic infections, its association with glomerular disease was established only in the 1970s. The clinical manifestations range from isolated proteinuria or hematuria to nephrotic syndrome, nephritic syndrome, renal insufficiency, and RPGN.Schistosomal associated nephropathy is independent from oviposition, being mediated by host immune response to circulating adult worm antigens, which have been detected as circulating antigens in infested patients.Specific antibodies of all major immunoglobulin classes had also been detected in the sera of infested patients. The aim of this study was to study mesangial cell-matrix interactions in schistosomal nephropathy in humans and mice, and to study the temporal relationship between hepatic lesions and glomerular pathology in infected mice. This study included human subjects and an experimental part (mice).Human Study: Included sixty persons divided into the following groups:Group (I): thirty patients with hepatic schistosomiasis who, were subdivided into two subgroups according to urinary proteins excretion .
