Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent and chronic disorder. The re-establishment of MDD following a diagnosis-free period, or recurrence, is one of several forms of chronicity. Estimates indicate that 60–80% of adults who experience one episode will undergo at least one recurrence, with the majority of recurrences occurring within the first 5 years
It is important to identify risk factors to be able to implement preventive strategies against depressive disorders. However, prospective studies of first incidence depression that provide information about risk factors are infrequent. Considering the high recurrence rates of major depression, better understanding of factors that render the remitted individual vulnerable to relapse and suicidal risk are warranted.
Psychiatric disorders of the individual including previous depressive symptoms and Episodes, Social factors like marital status, life events, social isolation, low income or financial problems and low level of education are risk factors in recurrence of MDD.
