Abstract

This thesis presents and describes the studies and research activities which were performed to examine the potentiality of the installed combined screening systems to search of hidden explosives and illicit materials inside passengers luggage and mid-size cargo containers. These systems apply neutron and gamma-ray collimated beams of different geometries to allocate the position of suspected object by radiography scanner and object type by fast and thermal neutron activation analysis. Screening of inspected luggage or container was achieved by a scanner based on using fast neutrons and gamma radiography techniques. Fast neutrons of mono-energy 14 Me V emitted from sealed tube neutron generator works with (D,T) reaction were used. Also fast neutrons of continuous energy spectrum emitted from Pu-n-Be and 252Cf neutron sources were used. Moreover, a gamma scanner works with beams of 60CO gamma rays was used. The source shields for neutrons were designed based on calculation performed by MCNP code.
