Abstract

All cases were collected from Menoufiya Hospital. It was found that females were more affected than males. The average age incidence was 35 years, which is less than what was recorded by other investigators MNG is commen in the child bearing period between 20 - 40 years of age. It incidence in this series may denote a relative iodine diffeciency due to pregnancy and lactation. Surgical line of treatment differs according to the type and site of the nodule, thus surgical removal is a firm indication inspite low incidence of malignancy in our country. Partial lobectomy was done in cases in which nodule is very small and localised to small area in the lobe of the gland. It is safer to do total thyroid lobectomy to overcome the possibility of a missed microscopic nodule in the nearly normal thyroid tissue which may cause recurrence. Moreover the presence of the predisposition to form nodules, in some cases was proved microscopically. Also total thyroid lobectomy is just enough as a satisfied’ procedure if the nodule proved later on by histological examination to be malignant.
