Abstract
The aim of this work is to study the prevalence of metabolic syndrome among the employees of Tala Central Hospital in Menoufiya Governorate according to IDF, NCEP (ATP III) and modified WHO definitions as a cross sectional study and to determine the possible risk factors of metabolic syndrome among subjects. The number of subjects was seventy, their age ranged from 23 – 60 years old with mean age of 41.5+18.5 years old, they included forty two males and twenty eight females, The subjects were classified to subgroups according to age, gender, residence, marital status, consanguinity, occupation, income, smoking, exercise and obesity. All subjects were submitted to clinical evaluation and basic laboratory investigations. Insulin was measured using Automated Chemiluminescence System (ACE: 180) which is a two-site sandwich immunoassay using direct chemiluminescence technology which uses constant amounts of two antibodies. HDL–cholesterol was measured using direct method for HDL-cholesterol assay using automated chemical analyzer with a certified reference serum (115AEK, HDL-C = 1.361mmol/L, Kyowa Medex) as a calibrator. Triglycerides were measured using the enzymatic colorimetric method which requires only 20 μl of serum and 10-min incubation and is rapid and simple. Glucose was measured using hexokinase G-6DH enzymatic method which is an endpoint reaction that is specific for glucose.
