Abstract

The objective of this study was to assess the effect of nuts in rats with hyperglycemia and some hypercholesterolemia. The rats were divided into two main groups as the following: The first group (7 rats) fed on basal diet as the control negative. The second group (35 rats); hyperglycemic and hypercholesterolemic rats were divided where diabetes was induced in normal healthy rats by injection with 150mg/kg body weight of recrystallized alloxan to induce hyperglycemia and hypercholesterolemia into 5 subgroup (n =7) according to the following scheme.
Subgroup (1) fed on basal diet only (control positive). Subgroup (2 and 3) fed on basal diet containing amount of walnuts provided the diet with (2.5% and 5%) oil respectively. Subgroup (4 and 5) fed on basal diet containing amount of peanuts provided the diet with (2.5% and 5%) oil respectively.
Our findings suggest potential benefits of peanuts and walnuts consumption in lowering serum glucose and lipid fraction. The best results were observed in walnuts provided the diet with 5% oil in serum glucose.
