Abstract Time is one of the important factors of soil development. Barren lands, when put under cultivation, would exhibit variable changes in their physical, chemical, biological and mineralogical properties. The degree of any observed changes depends to a great deal on the period of land use. For newly reclafried areas, detection and evaluation of changes produced in soil properties upon cultivation could be considered esseji tia]. for better land management. Also, it could serve the future agricultural management in new similar areas. Six sites v,ere chosen for the current rtu8y to represent El—Kharga depression namely; El—Mahariq, El—Sherka (north of Kharga); Ganah, I3olaq (middle of Kharga) and Garrnashin, Paris (south of Kharga). Dch site vms represented by four profiles; three from soils that are being oultivatd for different periods and one from a virgin land. All soil:j are clay in texture and none si es rhovi signs of salinity and/or alkalinity. Analyses of these - soils, to the depth of 100 cm, vere carried out to detect any changes in soil properties caused by cultivation practices. Results indicate that cropping operationssuth as pioughing, irrigation, drainge, ... etc., resulted in a |
