Abstract
SUMMARY
The date palm occupies an important place among the other fruit species in Egypt due to its good taste and high nutritional value.
It was suggested that successful growing of rutab” species was limited to the northern part of Egypt (Delta), however,it was proven to be successful by the pioneer work (1970) of the Faculty of Agriculture in Assiut. Furthermore, Zaghioul and Samany cvs. produced dates with high quality and early ripening (30 to 45 days earlier than the northern part) and that is considered to be of high commercial value. For these advantages farmers have demanded to grow’such cultivars.
The problem is most farmers believe, mistakenly, that date palms require neither irrigation nor fertilization since the palms can get some of their requirements, i.e. water and fertilizers from what is given to fruit or vegetable crops grown under them.
Aims. This work was undertaken to determine the requirements of date palm of Zaghioul cv. to nitrogen and phosphorus fertilizers in order to provide farmers with an accurate fertilization programme under similar growing conditions.
