Abstract SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION The knowledge of the external characteristics of fig shoot, i.e., leaf area, shoot length, number of nodes per shoot, internodal length etc., are closely associated with certain internal factors that are responsible for fruitfulness. Such knowledge, therefore, is of utmost importance and value in any fundamental study of the internal factors which cause fruitfulness in the fig. Accordingly, this investigation was carried out at the Experimental Orchard of Assiut University during three successive growing seasons of 1991.1992 and 1993. The main objective was planned to study the effect of certain close planting distances and pruning severity on certain physiological responses of young plants of two fig cultivars, viz. “Sultani’ and “Conadria’. Another objective was to measure certain growth activities and the status of some organic and inorganic constituents in the leaves. Transplants of one—year—old were planted on February 1990 in clay soil according to rectangular system at the following spacings: Si— 0.75 x 1.0 m (5600 plants/feddan) Sz- 0.75 x 1.5 m (3730 plants/feddan) Sn— 1.25 x 1.0 in (3360 plants/feddan) S4— 0.75 x 2.0 in (2800 plants/feddan) S5— 1.25 x 1.5 m (2240 plants/feddan) S— 1.25 x 2.0 m (1680 plants/feddan) |
