Abstract This Study deals with a corpus of 3026 errors, Collected from free essays written by 190 fresh. Students accepted as learners of Englishas a foreign language in the English Department at Tanta Faculty of Education in 1985. The errors in the corpus are identifed into psycholinguistic and linguistic types, their causes and strategies involved in their making are discussed, and pedagogical implications are pointed out. Chapter(1) Is introductory. It starts with a Statement of the problem, shows the significance of mastering a foreign language suntax and the significance of errors made by foreign language learners. Chapter (2) Provides a theoretical background to this applied study as well as a review of some related studies. Chapter (3) Discusses”Interlingual Errors, i.e.errors due to L1 interference. Chapter (4) Deal with ’Literal-Translation Errors’, due to the use of translation as a teaching/learning strategy. These errors have been divided into (1) Literal translation of Sentences. (2) Literal translations of Clauses. (3) ” ” ” Phrases. |
