Abstract

Thoracic trauma is a common cause of significant disability and mortality worldwide, with a mortality rate ranging from 15 to 77%.chest trauma is responsible for one fourth of all traumatic deaths in the United States and it’s the third cause of death in trauma patient after head and spinal cord injuries. According to 2002 statistics, approximately 5.7 million accidental deaths occur annually worldwide according to the WHO 2002 report. Blunt thoracic injuries are more common than penetrating chest trauma and the severity of thoracic injury can be predicted from the type of impact, speed of impact and the adequacy of restraint. Blunt thoracic trauma is mainly the result of rapid deceleration, or crushing in road traffic accidents (66%), next to it, fall from a height, Assault and the least occupational accidents with the majority are in 16 – 65 years of age. The aim of this study was to evaluate the different aspects of blunt chest trauma cases admitted to the Alexandria Main University hospitals. This includes description of different pathological entities, highlighting different therapeutic modalities and evaluating the in hospital mortality and morbidity following blunt chest trauma.
