Abstract

All agents of general anesthesia affect on C.N.S. function postoperatively such as halothane which alters peformance on
psychomotor for 5 hours, but some drugs as propofof has short impairment as well as isoflurane and sevoflurane. these impairment is benign and transient Gerieral anesthesia cause C.N.S dysfunction as:- delirium with
underlying risk factors an cerebral hypoxia, hypotension, old age,
preexisting organic brain diseses. and some drugs. precipitate delirium
most be avoided. Stroke which uncommon in non neurologic and non cardiac surgery but increases for 10 folds in cardioc surgery especially in elderly in the form of embolism and thrombosis.
General anesthetics as intravenous agents cause decrease in cerbral blood flow, cerbral metabolism and incease or decrease ICP. Monitor of C.N.S function is very important to evaluate and
detect impairment of C.N.S which include TCD Neurological
examinations, C.T, MRI, evoked potentials and EEG. which an detect
emboli or thrombosis. Some situation of specific surgical procedures lead to C.N.S dysfunction postoperotively as in carotidendartectony which cause
embotic or thrombotic stroke and can detect by TCD, also cardiae surgery and cardiopulmonary bypass lead to stroke most commonly embolic or thrombotic.
