Abstract

EEG is a simple and inexpensive tool used in the diagnosis, evaluation and treatment of different neuropsychiatric disorders. EEG changes in patients with dementia due to AD showed diffuse slowing of background rhythms and uncommon to present by triphasic waves. QEEG changes in patients with AD revealed a decline in the percentage of alpha power and a concomitant increase in theta and delta power relative to the degree of dementia. EEG changes due to the effect of donepezil in patients with mild AD showed that before treatment, posterior sources of delta, alpha 1 and alpha 2 frequencies were greater in amplitude in non-responders, after treatment, a lesser magnitude reduction of occipital and temporal alpha 1 sources characterized responders.
In patients with VD, focal abnormalities, such as spikes, sharp waves and slowing were reported. The presence of these focal abnormalities depends on the size and location of the infarcts. Small deep lacunar infarcts have relatively little effect on the EEG. In another study in patients with VD the EEG showed a decline in the percentage of alpha power and a concomitant increase in theta and delta power relative to the degree of dementia.
