Abstract

In the last 15 years, the use of Fiber Reinforced Polymers<>(FRP) as internal concrete reinforcement has gained a lot of interest
worldwide. Many applications have been reported in the literature to
demonstrate their use in infrastructure applications to make use of
their superior non-corressive and non-conductive performance.
The contribution of the Egyptian researchers in this field has
been restricted as this type of advanced reinforcement is hardly
available in the local market. On the other hand, the imported product
is very expensive and the selection alternatives, with respect to the
bar type, size, and surface configuration, are limited.
In house manufacturing of FRP bars has been described in this
research using locally available glass fiber roving and polyester to
produce mono type GFRP bar. Because the GFRP reinforced concrete
beams are brittle as the mono GFRP bars do not exhibit yielding, the
ductility of the GFRP beams is a matters of concern. One method to
improve the ductility is to use hybrid bars. A hybrid bar is made by
mixing different types of fibers that possess different modulus of
elasticity. In the current work, hybrid FRP bars made of glass fibers
mixed with nylon fibers were used.
The behavior of the in-house manufactured mono as well as
hybrid FRP bars as concrete reinforcement is investigated. Simply
supported beams (120 x 200 x 1730 mm) are reinforced with FRP
bars and tested till failure. The behavior is studied in terms of.
