Abstract

This work investigations numerically the influence of electric field on the heat transfer enhancement (electrohydrodynamic heat transfer enhancement) for forced convection in a horizontal channel consisting of two opposite electrically grounded hot plates and cold air flowing between them as a model of a heat exchanger. The electric field is generated by positive corona from a wire electrode charged with a high DC electric potential at the center of the channel. The effect of the variation of the electric applied potential on both of the nusselt number and the friction coefficient was examined.
Also the influence of the primary air flow Reynolds number and the temperatures of the plate and the air stream were discussed. The results of this study showed that the enhancement of the average nusselt number increases with increasing of applied potential, while decreases with the increase in Reynolds number and dimensionless mean temperature. The results indicate also that there was an increase in the friction coefficient ratio (the ratio of the friction coefficient with the application of electric field to that without electric field). This ratio increases with the increase of the applied potential and decreases with the increase of both the Reynolds number and the dimensionless mean temperature. It was observed that the electrohydrodynamic enhancement of heat transfer offers substantial increase in the average heat transfer coefficient with moderate increase in both the average friction coefficient and electric power consumption.
