Production and marketing problemsarejmportant economic topics at present which receive attention from researchers because of the limitations encountered by the production and marketing system of agricultural crop in general and cotton in particular. The importance of this crop is attributed to its status among field high economic value crops,since it is plays an important role in satisfying various human needs specially clothing. Cotton occupies an important position in the Egyptian Economic structure. It is the principle crop which occupies the largest agricultural area and contribution to the national income. In addition, it utilizes the largest number of workers and is considered the major source of income for the majority of farmers.
This study aims at revealing the status of cotton in Egypt’s National agriculture economy in general, and in Assiut governorate in particular through studying analyzing the problem or phenomena of continuous decline in the size of its cultivated area in recent years and finding out the most important factors responsible for declining or deteriorating average production per feddan during the same period. It aims also to reveal some of the economic factors which made many farmers avoide cultivating cotton and their responses to these factors. This knowledge will help planners to predict the size of cotton areas in the future
